Art and Design

What do we study in Art?

In Art we encourage independence.

Through a number of projects students develop practical skills in a range of media, including paints, clay and print-making.

Students also enrich their critical thinking and decision making skills, analysing the work of many artists and designers from different times and cultures and relating art works to their own.

Why study Art?

Studying Art can be a richly rewarding experience; and although we do expect students to work hard, they will be developing personal communication skills, confidence and an expressive imagination. These creative thinking skills will help them succeed, whatever path they decide to follow when they are older.

So what do the pupils think of Art?

These are comments from two Year 12 pupils who have studied Art at A-level:

“I found it (GCSE Art) to be a challenging but an inspirational course. The best thing about the course was the experimenting, trying out different materials as well as making; just getting dirty and taking chances.  We were more free to do what we wanted and I think that was the best way to prepare us for A levels.”

“I found GCSE Art really exhilarating and enjoyable.  I was allowed to try different things in my art work and as I wasn’t  set  with  specific  things  to  use, I could  make as many mistakes as I  liked  and  learn  from  them.”
