Design and Technology

Aims of the department

In Design and Technology, we aim for all students to become:

  • Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
  • Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
  • Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.

 Students learn to:

  • Combine practical and technological skills with creating thinking to design and make products that meet human needs
  • Use current technologies and consider the impact of future technological developments
  • Think creatively and intervene to improve the quality of life, solving problems as individuals and members of a team.

Through design and technology pupils develop confidence in using practical skills and become discriminating users of products.  They apply their creative thinking and learn to innovate.

The department runs two after school clubs: a textiles club and a product design club.  Students are encouraged to be creative and to use their imaginations.  The after schools clubs have participated in a number of nationwide competitions: we have previously been winners of the Toyota Technology Challenge and have had a finalist in the Futurechef competition.   In addition, the department runs a hugely popular recycled fashion show every Christmas.
