Aims of department

At La Sainte Union School, the Mathematics Department aims to enable pupils to build a secure framework of mathematical reasoning which they can use and apply with confidence. Our wish is for pupils to recognise and appreciate the universal importance of mathematics and how it helps us to understand and change the world. We aim to do this by:

  • setting challenging targets with high expectations for all pupils.
  • offering a variety of approaches to teaching and learning to engage and motivate pupils and demand their active participation.
  • smoothing the transition for pupils between Key Stages and ensuring progression throughout their time at La Sainte Union School.
  • exploring enrichment opportunities outside the curriculum to enhance pupils’ enjoyment of mathematics.

Wider study and enrichment in Mathematics

At home, pupils should be encouraged to work with the mathematics they encounter in everyday life. For example, they could estimate the cost of shopping bills; discuss supermarket offers and work out best value; find examples of numbers and data in newspapers and magazines; read information from maps, schedules and timetables; measure ingredients when cooking; adapt recipes for different numbers of people; take opportunities to discuss weights and volumes on packets of food.

For additional support and further study, pupils should talk about their work with reference to their textbook and online resources such as www.mymaths.co.uk, www.mangahigh.co.uk, www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize, or www.nrich.maths.org for extension activities. Maths club is held every Wednesday after school and is open to all pupils from years 7 to 13, and pupils may sign up to take part in enrichment activities as part of Maths Week each July.
