Religious Education

Aims of department

Religious Education at La Sainte Union is taught to all pupils at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 and is rooted in Gospel values and the ethos of the school. GCSE RE is compulsory for every student and a General RE course is offered for students in the 6th Form. There is also a highly successful A-Level RE course which focuses on Philosophy and Ethics.

The RE department’s aims are in accordance with the mission statement of the school. They are as follows:

  • to assist pupils in recognising the importance of the religious and spiritual dimensions of life and develop their own personal faith and attitudes towards this;
  • to enable pupils to explore and critically engage with the many moral and social issues encountered in life;
  • to assist pupils in deepening their own personal faith in their search for meaning and their vocation, moving them towards fuller understanding of their own particular emotional development, a positive self-image and a better understanding of themselves and others;
  • to enable pupils to understand the practices of the Catholic tradition and to enter into its beliefs, feelings, values and attitudes;
  • to provide students with insight into the beliefs and attitudes of other world faiths and to assist them in developing respect for the conviction of others;
  • to assist the school’s commitment to the cross-curricular dimension of the syllabus and serve the school community.
