Modern Languages

Our aims and objectives relate directly to those of the school where the focus is on the development of students through effective teaching and learning within a Christian ethos. Our aim is to strive for excellence through the consistent application of standards and by continually monitoring and reviewing our practice in order to:

  • Promote language learning as a valuable, rewarding and enjoyable experience.

  • Provide students with the opportunity for the successful learning of modern foreign languages through a “can do” communicative approach using the range of resources available appropriately

  • Equip students with a range of structure, skills and vocabulary in order to understand and respond effectively.

  • Enable students to work independently, in pairs and as part of a group or team in a variety of activities, so that the learning of each foreign language contributes to the development of core skills such as ICT, listening, reading, speaking and writing.

  • Value and encourage each student so that she gives of her best irrespective of ability.

  • Encourage students to consider each foreign language as a major cultural feature and in doing so increase language and cultural awareness.

  • Encourage a positive attitude towards learning a foreign language and to speakers of that language and a sympathetic approach to other cultures and civilisations.

  • Develop further cultural awareness through a programme of visits covering all three key stages.
