Music

At La Sainte Union School, music is a vibrant part of the culture and ethos. There are many exciting opportunities which offer a variety of challenges to suit all our students, whatever their musical background. We have excellent facilities within the department which comprises 2 classrooms, an ICT room, a percussion studio and 6 practice rooms. There is a range of acoustic and electronic instruments together with 20 Apple Mac computers equipped with notating and sequencing programs.

Pupil’s lessons comprise 3 general activities; composing, performing and listening and they are taught in mixed ability classes throughout the school. Lessons are an hour long, years 7 – 9 receive 3 a fortnight, GCSE students receive 5 a fortnight and A-level students receive 10 hours in total over the fortnight.

We offer a range of choirs, bands orchestras and other ensembles that rehearse throughout the year during lunchtimes and after school. They are run by full time staff as well as instrumental tutors. These groups perform regularly in school concerts but also have the opportunity in being involved in the Camden Borough concerts in the Royal Albert Hall. In July 2002 the Junior Voices got into the finals of the National Choral Competition and performed in the Royal Festival Hall.

We employ 20 professional musicians to come in and give individual lessons to students that wish to study a musical instrument or voice. These lessons take place during the school day on a rotational basis.

We are an energetic department that puts a great deal of time and effort into the curriculum we teach and the numerous concerts we put on during the school year.
