Religious Education

Religious Education at La Sainte Union Catholic Secondary School is taught to all pupils at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. It is the only strand of curriculum which is followed by all pupils in the school. All religious education, including the formal classroom teaching and the broader education imparted by the extra-curricular activities and the ethos and values of the school, is rooted in the Gospel.

The RE department’s aims are in accordance with the mission statement of the school. They are as follows:

  • to assist pupils in recognising the importance of the religious and spiritual dimensions of life;

  • to enable pupils to know the practices and worships of the Catholic tradition and to enter into its beliefs, feelings, values and attitudes;

  • to assist pupils in developing a deeper understanding and to enable them to reflect upon their own religious attitudes, values and practices;

  • to assist pupils in deepening their own personal faith in their search for meaning in their lives, moving them towards fuller understanding of their own particular emotional development, leading to a positive self-image and a better understanding of themselves and others;

  • to enable pupils to explore and address the many moral and social issues encountered in life;

  • to provide students with insight into the beliefs and attitudes of other world faiths, and to assist them in developing respect for the conviction of others;

  • to assist the school’s commitment to the cross-curricular dimension of the syllabus.

There are five dedicated teaching rooms and an RE Department Office. All rooms are equipped with video and TV facilities and three rooms have interactive whiteboards.  All students are entered for an accredited Religious Studies examination at the end of year 11. There is also a very successful A level course in Religious Studies on offer at AS and A2 level.
