Wednesday 7 December 2022 Future Architects We were honoured to be able to take 10 year 10 and year 12 students to Arup Architecture on Tuesday 22nd November. Students were introduced to the role of an architect and life in an architecture firm, as well as university and apprenticeship pathways into the profession. Students were also given an office tour of Arup’s showcase building on Fitzroy Street and encouraged to try out some skills themselves. It was revelatory to understand the role of a building in human health and well-being, social and cultural capital and even national identity. We even learned how the Sydney Opera House was built by Arup in the earliest days of computer-assisted design! While students worked and learned, teachers and advisers were meeting with Arup to help them design a new work experience and mentoring pipeline with local schools – truly inspirational, and a great credit to the company’s commitment to helping young people. Wednesday 12 October 2022 Gallery trip for Black History Month On the 16th of September, our year 12 and year 13 A Level classes went to the Southbank to visit “In the Black Fantastic” at the Hayward Gallery. It was incredibly inspiring as it made us think about concepts like race and gender on a much deeper level than we are used to. Each artist we saw gave us a new thing to think about and that’s what made it so interesting. Ellen Gallagher explores new myths and stories throughout history, with giant watercolour paintings, whilst Lina Iris Viktor creates beautiful images using powerful colours like Majorelle blue, black, white, red and gold – even using real gold. As well as all of the different and amazing artists, the whole exhibition tied in together as it all followed the over-arching theme of exploring race and what it means to be black.
