The English Department at La Sainte Union aims:
- to provide students with an interesting, relevant and inclusive curriculum centred around the appreciation of literature and language in its many forms;
- to stimulate and stretch the imagination of students through their response to literature and their own creative work;
- to develop students as confident and proficient users of both written and oral English in formal and informal settings;
- to encourage original thinking and critical habits of mind, stimulate a sense of personal and social awareness, and an ability to empathise with others.
- to encourage students to be fluent and discriminating readers;
Enrichment
A range of clubs for Y7-13 are run by the English Department. These include: American Literature and Culture; Book Clubs for each key stage; Debate Mate – a lively debating club that competes against other schools; Writers’ Club and Philosophy Club. Students also produce a yearly school magazine.
In addition there are opportunities to work with authors and poets in residence as well as trips to the theatre.
