Ethnic Minorities Achievement

EMTA (Ethnic Minority and Travellers’ Achievement) / EAL (English as an Additional Language) Department

Aims of the Department

"The basic building block of good communications is the feeling that every human being is unique and of value." (Unknown)

“Take advantage of every opportunity to practice your communication skills so that when important occasions arise, you will have the gift, the style, the sharpness, the clarity, and the emotions to affect other people.”
(Jim Rohn)

All pupils have the right to have equal opportunities in accessing the school curriculum.  At LSU we aim to provide support for pupils who have English as an additional language (EAL pupils); are from ethnic minorities; are refugees; or are travellers.

We want to help students learn to:

• develop a good understanding of spoken and written English in different contexts
• speak and write confidently in clear English in a variety of genres/text styles
• understand the importance of good communication to achievement
• appreciate the diversity of the world and to develop their own sense of identity no matter what their cultural background
• develop their home language skills by taking qualifications where available
