Physical Education

Aims of department

The aim of the PE Department is to develop every individual to their full potential physically, mentally, socially and emotionally through human movement. We aim to provide a rich sporting experience for each child as they develop their understanding of the need to keep fit and healthy. By promoting sportsmanship and team work we encourage pupils to take pleasure from the challenge of fair competition.

PE at LSU offers opportunities for pupils to:

1. Understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle

2. Discover which physical activities they are good at, and which they enjoy

3. Be effective when performing having developed a range of skills and an understanding of strategies, tactics and compositional ideas

4. Be creative and able to use their imagination having composed and choreographed their own sequences of movement

5. Have developed communication skills and leadership qualities having experienced a variety of roles such as leader, coach and manager

6. Be active, independent young women

The Physical Education curriculum:

We strongly believe in a 'sport for all' approach where each individual will understand the importance of regular exercise and leave with raised self-esteem and a high feeling of self-worth. In the curriculum area, we aim to create an effective and positive learning environment where students feel comfortable in approaching new and challenging concepts. This allows all students, whatever their sporting ability, to be challenged according to their ability and to in turn develop their own self-confidence.

Wider study and enrichment in PE

There is an extensive and varied extra-curricular programme of activities before school, lunchtime and afterschool. Pupils are all welcome and have the opportunity to perform as an individual in Gymnastics, Dance, Fitness and Trampolining or as part of a school team in Netball, Basketball, Football, Badminton, Rounders. We encourage all pupils to attend at least one extra-curricular club per week as part of a healthy, active lifestyle. When pupils show commitment at clubs they are selected to represent the school in matches against other schools and receive rewards for the number of hours they participate in at clubs.
